We do not have to overcome adversity alone…

As I sit in my office working on the YMCA’s 2010 budget, I can’t help but feel like Gideon.  I am up against an enormous opposing army, yet the Y’s army is so small and God continues to cut us back.  I can only hope that things will turn out like they did for Gideon and that we will be able to overcome the present economical state.  I pray that we will triumph over this adversary to victory one day.

It is so hard to look at our budget knowing that although we are so close to finally reaching financial stability, it still feels as though I can touch it with the tips of my fingers but can’t quite get them around it for a firm grip. There are so many amazing projects we are working on right now that could really turn this place around, yet we need the here and now.

Beth Moore said it best in her book, “We learn to be victorious by surrendering our lives completely to the Spirit of God, not by gritting our teeth and trying harder.” God took Gideon’s army of 3,200 and liquidated it down to 300 and even still those 300 men were able to defeat an army of hundreds of thousands. I guess it is true, that through our weakness is when God’s strength can shine through.

The YMCA is weak right now but through God’s strength and guidance we may also be victorious.

I would like to leave you with a scripture to give you hope in such a tough time…

Isaiah 41:13 - I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand and say to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.”

Sincerely,

Joslynn Skelton

Executive Director

Let’s all take a leap!

Today marks one year for me at the YMCA! Many changes have taken place throughout 2009 and with 2010 comes many more. The past year has been filled with so many ups and downs and the things I have learned will be lessons that will stay with me for a lifetime.

I came on as Executive Director last year with the passion and enthusiasm to make a difference, but the biggest lesson I have learned is that the Lord must guide us towards the changes that need to be made. I will happily become an instrument in the plan He has designed for us. Though sometimes I throw my hands up in defeat, I can’t help but realize that it is Him that keeps the YMCA open and that we owe Him all the credit for that.

I have always lived my life in a way that I thought was glorifying the Lord, but recently I realized that my faith was lacking. I have walked a straight line, lived my life as safe as possible, and have been too afraid to put myself out there and take a leap of faith in order to see what ministry the Lord has planned for me.  As much as I would love to go back to that safe life I had been living up until last year, I finally took that leap of faith and the Lord has changed my life immensely. Even if I fail miserably it will be a triumph for me to say, “At least I tried.” So here’s to another year and continuing to leap with faith!

When I went to Azusa Pacific University I loved when Francis Chan would come to speak to us. Even when I left APU I drove back on the days I knew he would be there, just to hear him speak. This is the sermon that inspired me to take a leap. I truly hope it will do the same for you!

Sincerely,

Joslynn Skelton
